It now seems to me that perhaps all my poetry comes from the contradictory effort to simplify and complicate figurative painting as much as possible at the same time.

This double tension, or struggle, produces intensities that I need. And yet, to be able to describe this urge as clearly as possible means that it may cease to be true.
